The Vietnam Veteran Polo honours those who served, suffered and lost their lives in the Vietnam War between 1962-1973.

Australia’s military involvement in the Vietnam War began with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam (AATTV) in South Vietnam during July and August 1962. Participation in the war ended in January 1973, however, this has officially been amended to April 1975 to reflect Australia’s further involvement during the fall of Saigon in 1975.

The Vietnam War remains the longest operational commitment of Australian forces. This hand-drawn, one-of-a-kind and historically reflective design captures the journey of soldiers during this controversial and divisive war.

Australia’s commitment to the Vietnam War consisted predominantly of army personnel, however a significant number of air force and navy personnel as well as some civilians also served and sacrificed. Amidst a sea of palm trees, helicopters and iconic aircraft whir overhead. Historical machinery and equipment, such as RAAF’s Bell UH Iroquois helicopter, nicknamed Huey (or Bushranger), the twin-engined Caribou and Canberra bomber.

As many Vietnam Veterans today reflect, artillery played an important role in grounds operations. This commemorative shirt also features Australian battle tanks, Centurion Mk.5/1. A soldier stands inside the hatch and salutes. Army personnel kneel below in single file with a Multi-Purpose Canine (MPC). To pay tribute to the dogs that joined Australia’s involvement, often assisting to track enemy troops, particularly those who were wounded and leaving a blood trail. As well as locating bunkers and tunnels.

The Royal Australian Navy commitment to the Vietnam War was extensive and prolonged, ranging from warships patrolling the coastline (such as HMAS Hobart as displayed) to logistic support vessels and clearance diving teams. As featured on this Vietnam Veteran polo.
