ABOUT
THE DESIGN
After the fall of Singapore in February 1942, the focus of the Pacific War moved closer to Australia. Japanese forces bombed Darwin and captured the village of Kokoda with its vital airstrip, later they headed for Port Moresby, traversing the treacherous Kokoda Trail that winds across the mighty Owen Stanley Range.
The Australian Army was ill prepared to confront the Japanese. Poorly equipped, undertrained, and unaccustomed to jungle warfare, the untested militia battalions were the first to face the battle-hardened invading forces.
A desperate and vicious seven-month campaign followed, which saw 600 Australian soldiers killed and 1600 wounded, compared to more than 10,000 Japanese fatalities. In January 1943 Japanese resistance on Papua ceased. The campaign was a crucial point in stopping the Japanese advance across the Pacific and towards Australia.
